Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k choose St Catherine’s Hospice
Once again St Catherine’s Hospice is to be the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k. The 2017 event will take place on Sunday 24th September and it will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometer race which was introduced for the first time this year. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee developed a very good relationship with St Catherine’s Hospice and decided unanimously to once again support this outstanding local charity.
St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. For over 30 years it has been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life.
In late October, seven members of the Half Marathon Committee were invited to the hospice in Crawley along with representatives of the Reigate Half Marathon to learn more about how it operates. It was a visit which provided real insight and showed the passion and total dedication of the staff and volunteers that provide this essential local service. Both races supported the charity and it was announced that a total of £17,000 had been raised by the Barns Green and Reigate races in 2016.
Commenting on this year’s charity, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “Our visit to St Catherine’s Hospice showed us just what a valuable charity this is and we are delighted to be extending our association with them for another year. In addition to raising money for charity, we are also able to make significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help us with the staging of the race”.
Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice said, “We are extremely grateful to the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k for their continued support. Each year the charity needs to raise £6 million in voluntary income to ensure it can keep providing vital services to those who need them and our sincere thanks go to all the runners and supporters who helped to raise so much money this year”.
This year almost 1800 runners registered for the Half Marathon and 10k races which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. Next year, the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will once again be playing while all the runners go through the grounds of the school during the race. What could be more uplifting for the runners?
